U.S. stock futures waver with midterm results likely to result in gridlock (3 minute read)U.S. stock futures on Wednesday were struggling to extend a winning run to a fourth day, as midterm elections looked to deliver the desired gridlock in Washington, nudging bond yields and the dollar lower. On Tuesday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 334 points, or 1.02%, the S&P 500 increased 21 points, or 0.56%, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 52 points, or 0.49%, to 10616. The S&P 500 is up 7% from its 2022 closing low hit in mid October, but remains down 19.7% for the year to date.
European markets pull back slightly as investors await U.S. midterm results (4 minute read)The pan-European Stoxx 600 was down 0.4% in early trade, with travel and leisure stocks shedding 1% as most sectors and major bourses slid into the red. The midterm elections will determine whether Democrats keep their slim majorities in the House and Senate, or if Republicans will seize control of one or both chambers of the legislature, an outcome that would mean there’s a significant power shift in Washington and the potential for gridlock.
