Stock market today: Dow snaps losing streak as energy stocks rack up gains (5 minute read)The Dow snapped a four-day losing streak Tuesday, as rising energy stocks helped the broader market overcome an ongoing march higher in Treasury yields following the Bank of Japan's unexpected hawkish pivot. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.3%, the Nasdaq Composite was up 0.01%, and the S&P 500 rose 0.1%.
Oil prices rise on U.S. drawdown, Chinese fears weigh (4 minute read)Oil prices rose on Wednesday after data suggested a larger than expected draw in U.S. crude stockpiles, but gains were capped by growing concerns over demand in China and a snow storm that is expected to hit U.S. travel. Brent crude futures were up 93 cents, or 1.15%, at $80.92 a barrel by 10:40 GMT.
European markets higher as investor sentiment brightens (4 minute read)European markets were in positive territory on Wednesday, reversing a negative trend seen in the previous trading session. The Stoxx index was up 0.8% in mid-morning trading, and all sectors and major bourses were in the green. Retail stocks led gains, up 2.1%, followed by financial services and oil and gas, which were up 1.3%.
Bank of Japan stuns markets with yield control policy change (5 minute read)The Bank of Japan caught investors by surprise with an unexpected change to a core tenet of its monetary policy, sending shockwaves across the currency, bond and equity markets. The yen jumped more than 4% to about ¥131.2 against the US dollar in New York trading, while Japan’s Topix equity index fell 1.5%. The 10-year Japanese government bond yield surged by its most in almost two decades, reaching a high of 0.47%.
