Stock futures fall following the S&P 500′s best week since June (6 minute read)Stock futures traded lower early Monday morning after the S&P 500 posted its biggest weekly gain in almost five months on the back of easing inflation data. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures fell 0.25%. S&P 500 futures declined 0.32% and Nasdaq 100 futures traded 0.55% lower. The S&P 500 rallied 5.9% last week for its best week since June. Investors cheered a lighter-than-expected inflation reading, betting that the Federal Reserve would soon slow its aggressive tightening campaign.
Inflation will drop ‘significantly’ next year, Goldman Sachs economists forecast (4 minute read)The Federal Reserve’s preferred measure of inflation will fall below 3% by the end of next year as supply constraints ease, the cost of housing falls and the labor market cools, according to Goldman Sachs. This may allow the Federal Reserve to be less aggressive in its interest rate hiking cycle as its strives to push inflation back down to its 2% target.
Has the stock market bottomed out? (5 minute read)Lower inflation is likely to be good for investors. There are two reasons for this. The first is that high inflation has been cutting into corporate profits. Both Alphabet and Meta Platforms announced recently that higher costs had been driving down profit margins. The second is that lower inflation is likely to mean lower interest rates. And when interest rates are lower, stock prices are typically higher. That’s why the encouraging inflation reading has sent stock markets higher.
